How to Use Mimetic Desire to Be More

Picture
During the break between seasons, we go to Gold School. The Gold School sessions are episodes I find myself referring back to and refer to in my keynote speeches and those I work with personally. Each one has given me 'gold' that I've adopted into my world or shared to help others be the best they can be, unlock their great ideas and get their Mojo working.

Luke Burgis, author of 'Wanting', writes about the study of French Polymath Renee Girard, who coined the term mimetic desire. From the theory of memesis, mimetic desire is how we imitate each other. It's about how someone does something, and then within weeks, it's a thing, everyone is doing it, and it's imitated widely. It's why certain tribes dress the same, speak the same, and have the same desires, good or bad. Well, that's memetic desire. I found it a profound learning and one that I share as much as I can in keynotes.

It's Not Time Management, Focus on Energy Management

Picture
During the break between seasons, we go to Gold School. The Gold School sessions are the episodes I find myself going back to and referring to in my keynotes.

Dr Jim Loehr is a world-renowned performance psychologist, researcher, and author of seventeen books. One of them is the bestseller 'The Power of Full Engagement', a book that changed my perspective and focus on planning, performance, time and management. By changing your focus from time management to energy management, it changes the whole game. I don't think I've ever had a guest who has been as articulate, who shared such wonderful stories, and didn't waste time or words in his considered responses to my questions.

Why So Many Kids Struggle & What We Can Do About It

Picture
During the break between seasons, we go to Gold School. The Gold School sessions are the episodes I find myself going back to and referring to in my keynotes. Each one has given me gold that I've adopted into my world or shared to help others be the best they can be, unlock their great ideas and get their Mojo working.

Erica Komisar, a leading New York-based psychoanalyst, shared how our actions as parents with a child today, regardless of how young they are, can have a massive influence on them in their adolescence. Erica is the author of 'Chicken Little the Sky Isn't Falling'. Her work for me is so profound, and it should be a session we all listen to year in and year out. So many kids today are struggling & this conversation explains why it is happening and what we can do about it.

Without question, Dr John Demartini's work has had a massive influence on my world. Dr Demartini is one of the world's leading behavioural scientists, a human behaviour expert and a Polymath. Two things. What are your highest values? What are your actions demonstrating? When you truthfully ask yourself these questions, your world will change.

Logan Gelbrich, season 2, Ep 213, is one of my favourite guests of all time, and I have to say there's not a day when I don't make the decision: go left or go right, the principal from his book "Go Right".  Logan is a Jedi master, and choosing to put the indicator on and go right has made a substantial difference to my world and how I judge success.

For those new to the work of Logan Gelbrich, he owns a bunch of super cool gyms in LA called Deuce Gyms, where through the fitness and wellness world, he teaches leadership... a fascinating way to create a new category and point of difference.  Logan is undoubtedly at the top of the performance game.

EP 427: The High Achiever Megamix

Operating at a Higher Standard

Picture
Over the four seasons of The Mojo Sessions, some definite themes have appeared. One of those themes concerns high performance, mental performance coaches, and higher standards. The guys at Doublestar, the production team behind The Mojo Sessions, suggested we lockdown a rewind with a collection of mental performance coaches who can share with us the right mindset, tools, techniques, rituals and routines to ensure that the season ahead is everything we hope it to be. It's a long-form episode containing five back-to-back conversations forming a holiday performance 'superset' to help you check in with yourself, set dreams, plan the strategy, raise the bar and be better next year than we were this year.

In the first session, we meet Navy Ace Top Gun instructor Bill Driscoll, who 75 is still as sharp as the day he was fighting dog fights in Vietnam. Starts - 00:06:35
Next up is the incredible Mike McCastle. Indeed, one of the sessions had the most impact on me. When you hear Mike, you'll be challenged to make the choice. Do you want to be in the few or be like most? Starts - 01:33:05
Pat McNamara is a guy who always operates at the highest standard. He is planned, intentional, meticulous, articulate, and always looking to push himself. When playing golf, he plays golf; when birdwatching, he just watches birds. His intentionality inspires me the most when looking at Pat Mac's work. Starts - 02:54:10
Dr Jeff Spencer has worked with many Tour de France-winning teams. He created his Champions Blueprint. For Dr Jeff Spencer, it's not just about winning. It's about a sustainable process that wins over the long haul. The Long Game. Starts - 04:02:12
I included Barry O'Reilly, who wrote the book 'Unlearn'. For any of us wanting to level up, we need to unlearn and relearn, let go of some old ways, reset and continue to grow. I took a lot from Barry's session.  Starts - 05:47:29

EP 426: The Contentment Megamix

Finding a Sense of Peace, Contentment & Ultimate Happiness

Picture
Some of the most profound feedback I have received over the four seasons of The Mojo Sessions from listeners worldwide is people wanting to find a sense of peace, contentment and ultimate happiness... finding a sense of self. This Megamix is a series of 5 episodes that get to the heart of this subject... How do we feel good about ourselves and our lives? As we close the season, it seemed appropriate to reflect on one of the biggest issues facing us: who we are, what makes us happy, and how we find peace, contentment, and personal fulfilment. It's one free-flowing mega episode, five conversations so that you can listen to them back to back. The beauty of the podcast is that the sessions live on and many people who recently have found the sessions may not go back to session 1, 2, or 3 to see what's there. So we pick the theme, select some gold and put it together into a megamix.

Ethan Kross - Ethan is the author of "Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It". How do we control our spirally inner narrative, the monkey mind, that chatter we all have that can be so disempowering? Starts - 00:07:30

Laura Gassner Otting - I have included this conversation because so many people said that they related such a lot to Wonderhell, that place between having success and thinking, "Oh... Can I do that again? Was it a one-off? Was I just lucky?"... that's Wonderhell. Starts - 01:33:14

Dr Amy Silver - Amy is a psychologist and author who discusses the management of emotions for high performance and well-being. Her book, 'The Loudest Guest: How to Change and Control Your Relationship with Fear, ' is about managing our fears- what they are, how they impact us, and what the key steps are to change our relationship with fear. To find peace, we need to control the loudest guest, fear. Starts- 02:47:26

Beth Kempton - Early in The Mojo Session series, we met the beautiful Beth Kempton, author of Wabi Sabi. Wabi Sabi is a Japanese term for finding perfection in our imperfections. This is a profound conversation for anyone wanting to be in the moment, find peace, notice our surroundings and be genuinely present. Often, I get comments from people who took a great deal from this conversation. Starts - 03:51:45

Matthew Dicks - Matthew has an extraordinary backstory and is arguably one of the world's great storytellers. This conversation covers not only how to build and tell a great story but also, essentially, how we can slow time. Matthew shows us that by being conscious of moments, we can start to take back the hands of time. A lot here can apply to our business world, particularly for our brand. Starts - 05:10:36

EP 424: The Trauma Megamix

When You've Lost Your MOJO

Picture
There was quite a reaction to our last session with Dr Gregory Smith, the guy who faced extraordinary trauma, turned his back on society, walked into a forest and stayed there for 10 years. Over the four seasons of The Mojo Sessions, there have been some definite themes appear. The guys at Doublestar, the production team behind The Mojo Sessions, suggested we do a Megamix of five trauma-related conversations back to back as a holiday superset. It's a long-form episode containing five conversations in all.

We start with Iris Gardner, the wife of former Navy Seal Commander-in-Chief, Jason Gardner. Iris had a brutal upbringing, living in a house with a sexual predator who was a friend of the family. Iris is brave, humble, and out to share her story so that we can benefit from her learnings. Starts: 00:07:50

Then we meet Preethaji, who runs the O & O Academy in India. Preethaji has such a simplistic way of demonstrating how many of us, through our thoughts and actions, live in a world of suffering. This conversation shows how we go from a suffering state into a beautiful state. I've interviewed Preethaji a few times, and I find her approach to life and her philosophy a huge advantage. Starts 01:49:15

Sarah Woodhouse is a research psychologist who specialises in trauma. We talk about trauma and traumatic experiences. What Dr Sarah wrote about in her book "You're Not Broken" is that many people who are suffering from trauma or a traumatic experience say that they feel broken. Sarah is fantastic. This conversation sets up how we can reframe trauma and traumatic experiences. Starts 03:01:00

I first heard Dr Bruce Perry in a conversation with Oprah on 'Oprah Soul Sessions'. At that time, Oprah said that her conversation with Bruce Perry was one of the most important she had ever had. Oprah realised that rather than exploring what was 'wrong with her', the better question was 'what happened to her?'. Anyone who knows me or has heard me speak in the last number of years will know that I think Dr Bruce Perry's book (written with Oprah) entitled "What Happened To You", is a most valuable resource, as what happened to you quite often is anchored down in a backstory. Starts  04:15:07

The lovely Yemi Penn spoke to us about rewriting our story. Your past does not equal your future. By embracing and acknowledging your past and rewriting that narrative, we can change it to how it can benefit today. Yemi is the author of the book "Did You Get The Memo", which is about changing that backstory. Starts 05:27:37

Listen to all five Megamixes back to back or break them up on several days as you go to and from the office or away on a road trip. These five conversations form the first in a Megamix series that will centre on one particular topic each time, which, for this Megamix, is trauma.

One thing that occurred to me when we were putting this together was that when you know somebody who is struggling, perhaps experiencing a challenging time of their life, or facing trauma or a dramatic experience, I think this Megamix is gold—five opinion leaders who each have an amazing story, philosophies and content to share. If you know somebody and think they can benefit, shoot them the link to this Megamix on trauma.

THE ORIGINAL SESSION INFO
EP 109: Iris Gardner - Building The Strength To Emerge From The Darkness
Iris Gardner spent her childhood off the grid, an ideal life in the woods for a kid, totally off-grid, heading out on horseback, confronting mountain lions, reading books, growing and hunting their food, until the day a sexual predator moved into the house. This family friend would throw the life of a young 5-year-old child into unspeakable darkness. Hear a remarkable story from a truly remarkable lady who has emerged from that darkness with a message that will change how we view life and the lives of our children.

EP 110: Preethaji - Creating A Life of Purpose, Free From Suffering
Preethaji, one of the world’s leading female philosophers, founded O&O Academy, a philosophy and meditation school, with her husband Krishnaji. She believes that you can live, as many do, a mediocre life with a contrived purpose, but a great life, career or relationship can only happen with an authentic purpose. Preethaji works with corporate leaders to discover purpose, connection and how to live in a beautiful state. Preethaji leads us to a whole new way of discovering love, passion, and creativity.

Ep 223: Dr Sarah Woodhouse - The Disempowering Enemy Within
Dr Sarah Woodhouse is a Research Psychologist specialising in trauma, helping people face this world and their past. Her book 'You're Not Broken', teaches us what trauma is (it's probably not what you think), how to recognise it, why it's there and how your past is likely holding you back. Sarah explains the pitfalls of ignoring awkward, upsetting episodes and how true freedom comes from looking back at your past with honesty. Using the latest research-based techniques, her own experience, and her twelve years of trauma research, Dr Sarah Woodhouse speaks with authority on this critical topic.

Ep 226: Dr Bruce Perry - Heal Your Mental and Emotional Wounds and Move Forward
Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern University School of Medicine, Chicago, Dr. Bruce Perry's new book 'What Happened to You?' was written with Oprah. 'What Happened to You?' is a book that helps heal our mental and emotional wounds, wounds that many carry for decades and never give a thought to. Through groundbreaking scientific & emotional insights on behavioural patterns and actual brain science, Dr Perry explores how we can shift our approach to personal trauma by asking what happened to us. Oprah believes her first conversation with Dr Perry was one of the most important and impactful of her career.

Ep 323: Yemi Penn - Rewrite Your Story
Documentary producer Yemi Penn believes we should create our own memo. Author of 'Did You Get The Memo?', Yemi, born in Nigeria, has endured her fair share of trauma for herself and her family, including childhood abuse and homelessness. Yet, today Yemi is a self-made millionaire, owning multiple businesses across multiple countries. Yemi shares mindset adjustments to rip up our old backstory and create the new life we want, daring us to create a new narrative for our life and ultimately write our memo.
